Quick Post - Science

In science we started our unit on continental and oceanic landforms. This started with the discussion of watersheds, drainage basins, weathering, erosion, and deposition. Before starting this unit in depth, we went out to the recess field to observe land in which water has somehow changed. Here are some pictures of what we noticed:










We used these pictures to identify terms such as weathering, erosion, and deposition. We further studied terms such as drainage basins, erosion, and weathering by using stream tables. Stream tables are designed to simulate a plateau in which water erodes the sand way and deposits it down stream. Here are some pictures of our stream tables:














After our study of continental and oceanic landforms, our goal is to create 3D models using the 3D printer. Our goal is to present these to you at our second Curriculum Night on December 5th.

A Couple of Things for this Short Week

I hope that everyone is having a restful Labor Day weekend. 1) Remember that T hursday, September 6 (6:30-8:00 ) is Opening Picnic . We purposely hold Opening Picnic after Labor Day so that students become acclimated to school and feel comfortable showing you around the classroom and school. After we all gather for the picnic, students and parents will head into the classroom. I'll give students the chance to show you around before I spend a few minutes talking about a few items you as parents will want to know such as homework and discipline policies. More "Balanced / Unbalanced" Activities

Today we continued playing around with balanced and unbalanced forces. So today we an activity in which students sat laid down on chairs with their heads on another person's lap. The chairs were pulled out. If forces were balanced, students should be able to stay up (not for long).  Here are some pictures of students laying down in chairs then having the chairs pulled out while balancing.

Communication Plan for Parents & Students

During virtual learning, communication between myself, parents, and students will be more important than ever. Being at CFI we are all so used to simply "popping in" the school when we have questions. Virtual learning will make this difficult unfortunately! Parents: Feel free to email ( scjohnson@richland2.org ) any time throughout the school day, but know I may not be able to immediately respond. I should be able to respond when I'm not engaged in synchronous learning or working with small group and individual students. Most emails will be responded to during my office hours between 3:00 - 4:00. (Honestly, I'm usually pretty good about responding quickly since I hate having my inbox full.) If you send any email after 4:00 pm, I will try to respond when possible.
