Meet Ms. Fonkert - Our USC Intern

Hello, my name is Taea Fonkert.  I will be Dr. Johnson's student intern this semester! I am from Summerville, South Carolina. I am a senior at the University of South Carolina majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in Counselor Education.  At school, I am involved in New Student Orientation.  I just completed my third summer as an Orientation Leader helping new students transition into the university as well as mentoring the new orientation leaders that are on the team each year.  I also do club gymnastics here at school.  I’ve done gymnastics since I was 2 years old so it’s been very fulfilling to get to continue that passion in college.  I am a Teaching Fellow so with that comes so many opportunities to be in schools pouring into the students and pouring into the Columbia area community.  I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a teacher.  I’ve always had that passion for helping children believe in themselves, in the gifts that each one of them has.  So, I am beyond excited to get to work with your students this year.  I will gradually start teaching more lessons. I hope that I get to learn as much from them as they do from me.  I cannot wait to get to know each student individually and create those relationships that leave an impact.  In my free time, I love to watch and play sports with my friends and family.  The San Francisco 49ers and Carolina Gamecocks are my favorite teams.  I also love to paint! I picked up a lot of painting projects during quarantine.  I look forward to meeting you and your children.

A Couple of Things for this Short Week

I hope that everyone is having a restful Labor Day weekend. 1) Remember that T hursday, September 6 (6:30-8:00 ) is Opening Picnic . We purposely hold Opening Picnic after Labor Day so that students become acclimated to school and feel comfortable showing you around the classroom and school. After we all gather for the picnic, students and parents will head into the classroom. I'll give students the chance to show you around before I spend a few minutes talking about a few items you as parents will want to know such as homework and discipline policies. Other than that, I'm more hoping to get to know all of you so we can quickly start relationships that will benefit the academic success of your child. 2) On Friday, September 21 at 2:20 will be our first 4th grade gathering. More "Balanced / Unbalanced" Activities

Today we continued playing around with balanced and unbalanced forces. So today we an activity in which students sat laid down on chairs with their heads on another person's lap. The chairs were pulled out. If forces were balanced, students should be able to stay up (not for long).  Here are some pictures of students laying down in chairs then having the chairs pulled out while balancing.

Communication Plan for Parents & Students

During virtual learning, communication between myself, parents, and students will be more important than ever. Being at CFI we are all so used to simply "popping in" the school when we have questions. Virtual learning will make this difficult unfortunately! Parents: Feel free to email ( scjohnson@richland2.org ) any time throughout the school day, but know I may not be able to immediately respond. I should be able to respond when I'm not engaged in synchronous learning or working with small group and individual students. Most emails will be responded to during my office hours between 3:00 - 4:00. (Honestly, I'm usually pretty good about responding quickly since I hate having my inbox full.) If you send any email after 4:00 pm, I will try to respond when possible. Last year I didn't allow myself a clear deadline for responding to emails or text messages so I felt like I was constantly available.
