Information for this Week

There isn't too much information this week. I do want to remind everyone that instead of having Curriculum Night #3, we will be using that time for student-led conferences. Conferences will begin after school and continue into the evening. We will also use Friday, February 17 (half-day) for student-led conferences. Those will begin in the afternoon and continue into the early evening. I am also looking at several more dates, including Saturday, February 18 (I'm waiting on my son's soccer schedule), to schedule more times. I am in the process of creating a SignUp Genius, and as soon as I have dates and time slots down, I'll get the sign up out to everyone.

Reading - We are still working on studying characters in books. This week we will begin one of my favorite read alouds called Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson.

Writing - Students have begun writing their DBQ pieces. We will be spending this week doing some editing.

Math - We are working on solving multiplication using the partial products method. This will help students understand and solve multiplication problems using the standard algorithm.

Social Studies - We have moved from comparing the French, Spanish, and English colonies, to simply focusing on the original 13 colonies, slavery, and the triangle of trade.

Science - We are continuing our study of astronomy. Lately, we have been discussing stars and constellations.

A Couple of Things for this Short Week

I hope that everyone is having a restful Labor Day weekend. 1) Remember that T hursday, September 6 (6:30-8:00 ) is Opening Picnic . We purposely hold Opening Picnic after Labor Day so that students become acclimated to school and feel comfortable showing you around the classroom and school. After we all gather for the picnic, students and parents will head into the classroom. I'll give students the chance to show you around before I spend a few minutes talking about a few items you as parents will want to know such as homework and discipline policies. Other than that, I'm more hoping to get to know all of you so we can quickly start relationships that will benefit the academic success of your child. 2) On Friday, September 21 at 2:20 will be our first 4th grade gathering. More "Balanced / Unbalanced" Activities

Today we continued playing around with balanced and unbalanced forces. So today we an activity in which students sat laid down on chairs with their heads on another person's lap. The chairs were pulled out. If forces were balanced, students should be able to stay up (not for long).  Here are some pictures of students laying down in chairs then having the chairs pulled out while balancing.

Finally . . . A New Post!

Thank you to all parents during this time! Your support has been a blessing!!! Because COVID numbers are really going up, I am going to really emphasize to students the importance of continuing with staying at their seats, cleaning their hands, and keeping masks over their noses. We all want to make sure we are healthy especially before we head to the Christmas Break in a few weeks. You should have heard by now that Dec. 21 and 22 will be virtual. During those two days I should be in California (it's the only time my kids get to see their grandparents), so I'm looking forward to doing some live Google Meets from the Central Valley. I'm hoping to show them where our food comes from and how it's grown, oil pumps, and if the air is clear, showing them the geography of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
